Does anyone know how wide the reed is supposed to be open? Also do I need to squeeze it together again while playing? I have two reeds, one 5 mm open, the other 2.5, but out of neither can I squeeze out a sound.

Hi, You need to get enough moisture in it to make it playable, it makes it more flexible / playable, then hold the reed and genteelly pres and twist your thumbs. Do this 3 or 5 minutes at the time before and after you play the reed.

Just a few more words about the Ghamish (Reed).
Don’t keep the Ghamish at the Duduk for storage. Put the Ghamish with its tapered end into the top part of your Duduk for playing. Use the “clamp” to fine-tune with your relieving pressure. To get the full scope of sound both the Duduk and the Ghamish need some time to be played warm and wet.
A practical idea: For a secure transport and storage get a cheap hard case for eyeglasses, drill some holes for a better air circulation and put your Ghamish there.
