The eclectic possibilities to create the sound of the Shakuhachi are fascinating, even though it has got only five tone holes: four holes on the front side of the flute and one for the thumb. Its pure and warm sound covers nearly three octaves. The technique is produced by blowing into a gap at the upper end of the instrument. Its sound is similar to other notched flutes such as Quena or Xiao, it is voluminous and light. The Shakuhachi is played holistically. In Japan world, it is also part of the Sankyoku ensembles and is combined there with the hetero-chord half-tube zither Koto and the lute Shamisen.
Each shakuhachi we offer made is unique and in a sense player and shakuhachi form a unique ecosystem, where breath and sound are mutually exchanged and over time players often create a profound personal tie to their instrument. Enjoying that bond and the originality of each piece of bamboo, the making process strives to find the essence and possibility of each piece and bring it to the open and frustrated.
